Making your business "legit" isn't necessarily difficult, but it can get confusing.
These steps can keep it simple:
Decide on a name
Sometimes, a business name can already be taken. Make sure to do a search online to make sure that the name you want is available. If it's not, you risk getting your paperwork rejected by the state.
2. Choose a registered agent
A registered agent is a business or person that accepts tax and legal documents on behalf your business. It's not an option. You NEED one. The registered agent can be you, but that could put you at risk of missing out on import information that you're not paying attention to or embarrassingly being served with legal or tax documents in front of others.
3. File Certificate of Formation
It costs $300 to file a Certificate of Formation in Texas. In this document, you'll be expected to provide the name of your LLC, information about your registered agent, the purpose of the company, and the name of the organizer of the LLC. If you get this wrong, amendments cost $150.
4. Get an EIN
This is like a social security number, but for your business. It allows you to pay taxes, set up a business bank account, and GET PAID.
5. Create an Operating Agreement
This document outlines your business's rules and regulations.
